Think neighborhood walkability isn’t important? Here’s why it is a good thing!http://consumer.healthday.com/fitness-information-14/walking-health-news-288/walkable-neighborhoods-help-cut-diabetes-rates-688493.html
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY RESIDENTS - 2014 was the debut of Walkability Day and the response provided great information that was shared with our local cities and county officials. This year, the entire month of May is dedicated to collecting feedback from the public about the neighborhoods and communities where they live! If you missed the opportunity to complete a checklist of how walkable your neighborhood is last year, be sure that you take time to take walk this MAY and let us know what you think.
A highly walkable area has many benefits:
- Healthier residents
- Improved community safety and decreased crime
- Increased community pride and social connections
- Higher property values
- … and more
Physical Activity is not a “dirty word”! Everyone benefits from walking and being active! “Walkability” is a measure of how friendly an area is for walking. Of course, this also includes biking, skating and jogging.
If your neighborhood is already walkable – do it, be more physically active!
